DVD Review - Another Earth
DVD released 11/29/11
IMDB Rating: 7 out of 10.
Directed by newcomer Mike Cahill, written by Mike Cahill and Brit Marling. Starring Brit Marling and William Mapother. Another Earth did very well in the 2011 film festival circuit and saw a limited theatrical release.
The story begins as a student's bright future is cut short by a careless accident. On the same day a planet seemingly identical to the earth appears in the distant sky. As the young woman attempts to atone for her mistake in an unorthodox manner the identical earth moves closer and closer. When it is learned that the new earth may be an alternate reality and that she may be one of the first chosen few to visit it, her unlikely and precarious relationship is strained.
The drama elements of Another Earth would have made a really good movie. The science fiction elements of Another Earth would have made a pretty good movie. The two elements delicately interwoven together make an incredible film. The story grabs you right from the beginning and keeps pulling you closer as the drama escalates and the duplicate earth grows in the sky. The WTF!? ending may confuse and anger some. It will leave you asking a lot of questions. The script isn't dialogue heavy. The special effects are nil for a science fiction film. This could have been a colossal failure if it were not for the tightly knit writing, directing, cinematographic and acting performances.
I'll call it a cerebral science fiction / drama. More so a drama with science fiction elements. I believe that it will gain a lot of popularity as more people see it via DVD, VOD and Cable.
This movie is what the spirit of independent film is all about.
